Overview

Manage Workcenter Capacity application used in advance planning in the area of manufacturing. Advance planning is required for the optimal allocation of materials and production capacity to meet demand. The Manage Workcenter Capacity application helps in monitoring the utilization of workcenters associated with the selected area of responsibility. With this application, users can quickly have an overview of the workcenters that are fully utilized or have a capacity overload so that they can swiftly act on critical situations. The application also determines which workcenters are operating on a normal range or possibly having a capacity underload.

The capacity load overview further assists the users in orders scheduling or rescheduling related decisions.

 

Goal

To design an application that helps the users manage workcenter capacities.

The application was targeted to be released for the S/4 HANA suite on-cloud edition for Desktops and Tablets.

 

My Role

  • Independent ownership of User experience and Interface design.

  • Managing UX Design Tasks - Use case gathering, Information Architecture, Task flows and Interactions.

  • Collaborating with the Product Owners and developers

  • Using agile approach for UX Reviews & Usability Enhancements 

  • Design sign off for the developed app.

Persona

The persona of the user - production planner outlined her roles and responsibilities, needs and goals.

of the capacity of available resources and components so that I can manage them effectively.

User Journey

Advance Planning manufacturing is a vast area that deals in complex processes. The persona proved to be useful in understanding the user, her interactions and tools used by her to accomplish work-related tasks. Further diving into this, helped in discerning the group of tasks which could be handled by a dedicated application.

Problem Statement

Working along with the Product Owner, I analysed the user's journey. This was followed by brainstorming to understand design areas which we had to target on to reduce user's workload. This led us towards the following problem statement:

How might we design experience for production planners from

various industries for quick capacity management of workcenters

Design Challenges

I broke down the problem statement into smaller chunks of challenges and tackled them one at a time.

 

  1. SKIMMING THROUGH VAST POOL OF DATA:

      Planning and scheduling processes involve large data sets which is cumbersome to analyze. 

      Solution:

  • Data filters and search box to view relevant data  

Filter Bar with Search Box and Default Filters

  • Settings to Show/Hide information as and when required.

 Dialog to show/hide columns triggered from Table Settings

  • Using visualizations to show complex data

Micro Charts to provide a glanceable view of capacity situation

 2. IDENTIFICATION OF ABNORMALITIES:

     The primary concern of the production planner is to view abnormalities or critical situations so that he can act on

     them as soon as possible

     Solution:

     Highlight areas that need attention.

     Use of colours that could be easily comprehended, to convey issues.

 3. CATER TO SPECIFIC REQUIREMENTS:

     SAP offers its ERP solutions to various industries such as manufacturing automobiles to FMCG and

     every industry type has its own process. Hence the solution should be tailored to suit the needs of each industry type.

     Solution:

  •      Provide readily available presets.

Preset options that meet specific requirement

  •      Settings to customize the capacity load range.

Change load settings as per requirement

4. QUICK DECISION-MAKING:

    In case of identification of abnormality, the user would have to take actions to rectify.

    Solution:

    Navigate to details and provide ways to resolve issues.
